Khufu summoned Ahmes, the Royal Oracle, to the Great Hall of the Palace, and asked him whether or not he should go to war against the Syrians. Ahmes, who scrupiously avoided ever giving a direct answer, pointed to a nearby freize depicting the god Anubis sitting on his heavenly thone.
"Follow the sitting one," the Oracle said.
Three years passed before Ahmes was summoned to the palace again. As he entered the Great Hall, he saw that image of Anubis had been replaced by another—an image of Khufu himself.
